Is it OK to Put On a New Roof in the Winter?

Ideally, a new roof should be installed when the temperature is between 40 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Asphalt shingles can crack when they’re being installed at temperatures below 40 degrees, and they can become damaged later on when the temperature changes. This would put the prime roofing season in the spring, summer, and early fall.

If you have a roof that needs to be replaced, it’s always advisable to wait until the spring if you can. If it turns out that you absolutely cannot wait, you can install a new roof in the winter if you’re careful. First of all, asphalt shingles will need to be heated before they can be installed. This is a simple matter of storing them in a heated environment such as a heated garage or basement before they are installed.

Second of all, shingles will need to be sealed when they are installed. This is normally done with a thermally-activated sealant that uses sunlight to bond the shingles to the roof. Since your roof will be getting a lot less sunlight in the winter, your shingles may need to be sealed with roofing cement by hand.

So yes, it is possible to install a roof in the winter even though it isn’t advisable. You might even find a great rate on a new roof if you shop in the winter, although most contractors would still rather wait until the spring to do the actual work.

If you find any serious problems with your roof during the winter, you’re probably better off having them repaired until it’s safer to have your roof replaced. Keep an eye out for leaks, ice dams, and excess snow on your roof. As long as you stay on top of your regular roofing maintenance and fix problems as they come up, your roof should last until the spring.
