How cold is too cold to roof a house?

The majority of the people living around cold-weather areas have summer, spring, and early fall as the best time to fix their roofs. Several others have a budget planned to replace or repair an existing roof over the summer. However, there are times when you can’t wait for the summer to make some changes to your roof.

Ideal weather for roofing a house should be warm free from rain or wind. Sadly, perfect temperatures and clear skies are not the norms daily. However, there are times where it is possible to replace or repair your roof during the cold season.

So, when is it too cold for a roof installation? The best temperature for roofing is between21-27 degrees Celsius. It is too cold to the roof when the temperatures go below 4 degrees Celsius.

Most roofing materials have adhesive characteristics that require heat from the sun for activation. You will risk a faulty roof if you ignore the temperatures outside.

Roofing below 4 degrees Celsius is a lot more work. You have to deal with cold installers, stiff shingles, and sealants that don’t adhere. However, it doesn’t mean that you can’t install your roof; it just means that you need to be more cautious.

If you have thermally activated sealants, temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius are not ideal for roofing. The sealants require direct heat from the sun and the average outdoor temperature to activate.

Whether cold or warm, metal roofs can be fitted at any time. Unlike other roofs, metal roofs do not rely on adhesive sealants. Nails and screws can keep the metals fastened into the deck. However, during winter, you need to be very careful to avoid injuries from falls and slips.

Temperatures beyond 80 degrees Fahrenheit are also not fit to fix a composition roof. The asphalt shingles may become pliable and are most likely to damage during roofing. In scorching temperatures, you may overdrive the nails, quickly eroding the protective granular layer.

Rubber membrane roofing items are more sensitive to temperatures as compared to asphalt roofing materials. EPDM roofs are joined together using a considerable amount of adhesives, which means for it to be pliable, high temperatures are needed. The adhesive is very thick and may also be problematic to work even with high temperatures.

The recommended installation temperature for EPDM adhesive is slightly above 7 degrees Celsius. However, it is not practical to have the adhesive remain under the recommended temperatures unless there is warm storage to keep it warm till it is used.

Clearing snow and debris will save you a lot of time in roofing projects. Wet and heavy snow can put a lot of weight on the roof leading to massive damage. Winter storm debris can also cause potential damage to your roof.

Roofing emergencies don’t stop when the cold season begins. Don’t let cold weather stop your roofing projects. With preparation and pay attention to your safety, you can complete your cold-weather project without spending time and money.
